PUSH PAST YOUR LIMITS.

Functional fitness coaching for CrossFit, HYROX, Olympic lifting, powerlifting, and anyone chasing a number.
Who This Is For

FOR PEOPLE CHASING
A PERSONAL RECORD.

Our Approach

TRAIN HARD.
TRAIN SMART.

Functional fitness training is strength, conditioning, and skill work aimed at a measurable goal: a lift, a time, a total, a finish. The modality varies. The scoreboard doesn’t.

Most plateaus are not effort problems. They are programming problems. Athletes do what they like: hammer conditioning and neglect the barbell, or live under the barbell and neglect the engine. The weakness never gets addressed, the nagging injuries pile up, and the numbers stall. Class programming can’t fix this, because it has to serve twenty people at once.

We can. Your assessment finds the limiter, the program biases toward it, and your coach manages the total load so you keep training hard without driving yourself into the ground.

Your Coaching Team

WORK WITH A COACH WHO'S BEEN THERE.

Every client gets a lead coach who owns the program. Steve leads our functional fitness and strength sport coaching, and he has competed across CrossFit, HYROX, Olympic weightlifting, and martial arts. He is not the whole bench: our coaches share notes on every client, and depending on your schedule and your goal, the coach running your sessions may be someone else on the team. Programming and delivery are separate jobs. That’s by design.

What We Specialize In

EVERY DISCIPLINE HAS A NUMBER.

We coach the fitness sports, where the training is the competition. If your event is not here, ask.

CROSSFIT

Skill gaps, strength biases, and engine work your class can’t program for you.

HYROX

Race-specific pacing, station efficiency, and the hybrid engine the event demands.

OLYMPIC LIFTING

Snatch and clean and jerk. Technique, positions, and force production.

POWERLIFTING

Squat, bench, deadlift. Building the total and peaking for the platform.

ENDURANCE

Marathon, cycling, triathlon. Strength work that supports the miles, not steals from them.

The Process

FROM BASELINE TO PERSONAL RECORD.

01

Consultation

A free call with Brian, our founder. Your event, your goal, your training history, where you are stuck.

02

Functional Assessment

Sixty minutes with your coach. Force testing, movement screen, capacity work, body composition.

03

First Training Block

Programming built around your weakness and your event calendar, delivered through CoachRx.

04

Retest And Progress

Quarterly retesting or sooner. If the number moved, we push. If it stalled, we change the input. Everything points to one place: event day.

Common Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

“Functional fitness” gets used loosely. At Physical Culture Brooklyn it means training several measurable qualities at once: strength, power, conditioning, work capacity, and the skills your discipline demands. That could be a bigger squat, a faster HYROX time, a cleaner snatch, or a CrossFit benchmark that finally moves. The job is not making workouts look complicated. It is finding what holds your performance back, training it deliberately, and proving it improved at the retest.

Not exactly. CrossFit is one specific form of mixed-modal training; functional fitness is the broader category for people training across several qualities or disciplines. You can love your CrossFit gym and still need individual work on strength, Olympic lifting, or a specific weakness. We are not replacing the sport or the community you enjoy. We make the athlete inside that system better.

Because effort and progression are not the same thing. You can work incredibly hard and repeat the same stimulus for a year. Sometimes the limiter is strength itself. Sometimes fatigue is hiding strength you already built. Sometimes conditioning volume is competing with the quality of your lifting. Our first job is figuring out which problem you actually have, instead of prescribing “work harder” again.

Yes, both can improve together; the trade-off is that pushing both hard means programming matters more. Heavy endurance volume can blunt strength and power, especially in the lower body, but cardio does not kill your gains. We manage the interference: pick the priority, control total volume, separate the demanding sessions. Hybrid training works. Random hybrid training is where people get stuck.

Start with the part people underestimate: you have to run. HYROX is eight kilometers of running around eight stations, and running is roughly half of total race time. Then you need enough strength and muscular endurance that the sleds, lunges, carries, and wall balls do not destroy the running you built. We build the engine, build the strength, practice station efficiency, and teach you to express it all under fatigue. Endless simulated races are not the same as building what the race requires.

Enough to progress, not so many that every session steals from the next one. A class, a long run, and a heavy squat day all create different demands, so we count the whole week, not just the sessions we program. For many people, two to three focused strength sessions do a lot when the week already contains classes or conditioning.

Put the priority first. If strength is the goal, your best lifting happens before hard conditioning; if endurance clearly leads, reverse it; when both matter, separate the demanding sessions. The principle underneath: stop asking one exhausted body to produce two maximal adaptations at once. Decide what today is for, then protect it.

Some soreness comes with hard training. Feeling beat up all the time is not the price of admission. Persistent aches, declining numbers, bad sleep, and constantly modifying workouts mean total demand is outrunning your recovery, and the fix is rarely “be tougher.” Sometimes it is selection, loading, or actual easy days. If something specific hurts, see our Injury and Post-Surgery Rehab coaching. Training works because you adapt. If you never recover, you never adapt.

If those lifts matter to your score, technical coaching saves years of wasted effort. They are the most skill-dependent movements in the gym: more force does not fix timing, positions, or bar path. We separate skill from strength, rebuild the positions you are missing, then add load under the conditions your sport demands. Sometimes the next PR is a strength problem. Sometimes it is a skill problem. The assessment tells us which.

Absolutely, and often that is the point. Your classes give you training and community; we give you specificity. Share your class schedule with your coach and we build around the existing week instead of piling a second program on top: dedicated strength sessions, technical lifting work, or a HYROX block, whatever is not progressing on its own. More training is not the answer. Better allocation of what you can recover from usually is.
